Croatian Coast to King’s Landing (Dubrovnik, Croatia)

So the drive down the Croatian coast is cathartic… The scenery was breathtaking. The roads alternated to being right next to the water with crystal clear blue water to being up on these narrow cliffs hundreds of meters up overlooking the islands.

Clear skies. Sunny. If a drive can be relaxing, that drive is. The drive rivals and I’d almost go as far as to say it’s better than the Pacific Coast Highway in along the California coastline.

It was much needed after a rough night before. But first we stopped in Split walked a bit around the city, hit up the morning open market picked up some bread, goat cheese, a watermelon, bread and some meat and headed to the coast.

The beach was perfect a little rocky patch with some shade trees shared between just us and a Croatian family. It was our private oasis. We ate and hung up our hammocks and napped to rest up before a long drive down to Dubrovnik.

At the beach we met this super animated 76 yr old Croatian man, Paskyali Barttul. He spoke english quite well having lived in Australia for 25 years. He gave us suggestions for 20 kuna red wine that is hand gestured, lip smackingly good. Then he proceeded to monologue about American politics, countries he likes, people, life under Socialist vs Capitalistic rule and so much more all while hold a mackerel in one hand and I think a red grouper in the other. It was a definitely a sight to see.

His favorite presidents are Kennedy, Clinton (because he was a bit of a playboy), and Nixon ( I assume for the same reasons as Clinton. Maybe because he was an actor too? I dunno). He says Carter was a joke and Obama.. well “he’s too left.” He likes the US, Germany, the Irish, and Poland. He likes all people no matter the religion even though he’s catholic. He was so friendly. He gave us his phone numbers. Yes numbers. He has 5 phones in case one them breaks, He can throw it into the Adriatic. Five super cheap phones.. pretty much the equivalent of the old Nokia 3310s. He invited us to stay at his place next summer and go fishing with him, but just bring him an American girl.

Paskyali, we may take you up on that. Who wants to come with?

After resting up we heading off to Dubrovnik, we arrived at sunset and saw the sun set over King’s Landing then headed to a hostel to charge up and rest up.
